The President of Ukraine goes to Alchevsk

Accompanied by Architecture Minister Pavlo Kachur, Coal Minister Victor Topalov, and Deputy Chief-of-Staff Anatoly Matviyenko, Victor Yushchenko went to the city of Alchevsk to personally check how heating supplies are being restored to homes. He is scheduled to visit a school and a few houses and meet with the local authorities at the Alchevsk Mill.

On January 26, the government decided to send UAH 2.5 mln to help the city cope with the disaster.

On the same day, Victor Yushchenko delegated a government group, led by Emergency Minister Victor Baloha, to visit the city to find out how much money the city council needs to fixa gap in the hot-water system leaving 677 local residents without heating.

Health Minister Yuriy Polyachenko had also visited the site. Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov is expected to come to Alchevsk in few days.

President Yushchenko offers condolences to Polish President Kaczynski

Victor Yushchenko expressed his condolences to Polish President Lech Kaczynski over a tragic incident in the city of Katowice. On January 28, a trade hall had collapsed there, killing dozens of people and injuring many more.

“In Ukraine, we are condoling with the Poles, our friends,” he wrote in a letter.

“Mr. President, on behalf of my nation, I would like to express ourheartfelt condolences to the people of Poland,” Yushchenko concluded.

Ukraine to promote uranium industry

The Fuel and Energy Ministry of Ukraine charges Nuclear Energy Department, Strategy Policy and Perspective Development Department, Ukraine’s Fuel and Energy Complex and Energoatom with elaboration of technical and economical basis for the uranium industry in Ukraine, the Cabinet press service told.

“Plan of the Measures concerning the Energy Safety of Ukraine” is aimed at the realization of this project. On January 23, the Cabinet approved of the document.

The President of Ukraine urged citizens to honor Kruty heroes

Victor Yushchenko called on Ukrainians to honor the Kruty heroes, the President’s press service informed.

“Today is one of those days when we should stop and forget all vanities of this world and bow our heads,” he said in a special address.

The President is convinced that January 29, 1918 was a unique page of our history “which bears a colossal emotional and historic load.”

“I am convinced: however many years pass, Ukrainians will still remember the events of that period. It inspires us to live and create,” he asserted.

“Our government and people should together defend Ukraine’s national interests. I urge all our politicians to be tolerant and ask our citizens to be wise. Our unity gives us might,” he concluded.

Russia lifts the ban on Ukrainian canned fish

Russia lifts the ban on Ukrainian canned fish which was introduced on January 20, 2006, Oleksandr Baranivsky the Agrarian Minister told.

According to the Minister, the ban was lifted when Ukrainian representatives had provided Russian partners with full information concerning the technological process of canned fish production.

Ukrainian-Russian meat problem to be solved by IEB and WTO

Ukraine asked the International Epizootic Bureau to promote the dispute on Ukrainian meat export to Russia, Oleksandr Baranivsky, the Agrarian Minister of Ukraine told.

According to him, the Agrarian Ministry of Ukraine has sent the letter for Bernard Vallat, the IEB Director General.

The Ministry intends to make a request to the World Trade Organization concerning this settlement.

JKX Oil & Gas plc acquired the new exploration license, onshore Ukraine

JKX announces that it has been awarded the Chervonoyarske East exploration license, onshore Ukraine, by the State Committee of Ecology and Mineral Resources of Ukraine. The license covers an area of 5.5 sq km and is located approximately 75 km from the Company’s existing production facilities. The license is valid for a period of five years for exploration and test production, following which the Company has the priority right to apply for a twenty-year production license, JKX press office reported.

The Chervonoyarske East license was acquired following an open auction held on the 26 December 2005 by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine. The auction was the first of its kind in Ukraine.

The Chervonoyarske East license is in the Kharkiv Region and is located on the northern margin of the Dnieper Donets basin, adjacent to the Chervonoyarske Field which produces gas condensate from the late Carboniferous sands. The data package purchased with the license includes 110 km of 2-D seismic data and data on the six wells drilled on the license to date; two of the wells produced hydrocarbons under test. The Company intends initially to reprocess the existing seismic data and shoot additional 2-D seismic to complete the data set. This will form the basis of the forward work programme.

JKX Oil & Gas plc is an oil and gas exploration and production company listed on the London Stock Exchange. The company has license interests in Ukraine, Georgia, Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia and the United States.

CEZ to purchase six Ukrainian electric power companies

CEZ to purchase six Ukrainian electric power companies

The Czech energy group CEZ is contemplating to buy six Ukrainian regional electric power companies (OblEnergos) in 2006. Speaking in an interview to the newspaper Ekonomicheskiye Izvestiya, Vladimir Schmalz, CEZ director for mergers and takeovers, said the CEZ had received a principled consent to wrap up a relevant deal from the VS Energy company, which controls the OblEnergos.

According to Mr Schmalz, the Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB, Switzerland) poses as the deal’s consultant. Besides, the CEZ is interested to buy two other Ukrainian OblEnergos, Vladimir Schmalz further disclosed, which belong to the company AES Energy, Action Ukrainian Report informs referring to Ukrinform.

The CEZ is contemplating to acquire energy assets in Bosnia, Ukraine and Bulgaria, which will cost around 3 billion, of which 1.5 billion will be spent on buying energy assets in Ukraine and Bulgaria.

In 2005 the CEZ bought the Romanian distribution company Oltenia for 151 million.and three Bulgarian distribution companies for 281.5 million.

The Netherlands-based VS Energy International N.V. (a daughter-company of the Slovakia-based Vychodoslovenske Energeticke Zavody S.P, or VSE) owns stakes in the public joint-stock company SevastopolEnergo (95.18%), KhersonOblEnergo (94.51%), KirovogradOblEnergo (94%), ZhytomyrOblEnergo (75.56%), OdesaOblEnergo (20.36%), ChernivtsiOblEnergo (21.98%), KhmelnytskOblEnergo (11.79%), TranscarpathiaOblEnergo (10.53%).

In October 2005 the VS Energy International N.V. refuted media reports about the company’s alleged intention to sell its parcels in several Ukrainian energy companies. According to the reports, the auditing company Deloitte & Touche was carrying out audits of these companies, with a view of evaluating their assets.

As VS Energy International N.V. representatives stressed, the company annually hires the Deloitte & Touche and KPMG to carry out audits of the Ukrainian energy companies.

The company AES Washington B.V. BN (a daughter-company of the US-based AES Corporation) holds 75 percent plus one share stakes in the AES-RivneEnergo, AES-KyivOblEnergo.
