Yanukovich offers to unite referendums

Commenting on President’s call to conduct a referendum on political reform, leader of Party of Regions Victor Yanukovich offers to discuss simultaneously Ukraine’s joining Common Economic Area and NATO, and status of the Russian language.

“If the power has decided to consult with the people nevertheless, we are ready to support such initiative so as to ask the people whether they want Ukraine to join NATO and whether they consider it expedient to give Russian the status of the second state language and to enter CEA,” said Yanukovich during the press conference in Kirovohrad, party’s press office informed.

“In such a way we propose to save money and not to conduct several referendums, but to consider these issues simultaneously,” noted the party’s leader.

The real Russian gas price is about $156

Declaring $95 price for Russian gas, the government of Ukraine “forgot” to include transport and other additional expenses in it. Regarding all that, the weighted average cost will make about $156, Victor Yanukovich opposition leader told.

“This price will cause economic troubles, budget losses and, of course, the social programs will be ditched. We worry about it very much,” stressed Yanukovich.

“We see that now pro-power politicians try to distract attention from economic problem provoking political and constitutional crisis. They resolve to it in order to destabilize the situation in the country,” noted the leader of the Party of Regions Victor Yanukovich.

Ivchenko: Ukraine abandoned Russian gas

To date Ukraine does not use Russian gas, as declared Naftogaz Presdient Olekdiy Ivchenko during today’s press conference.

“We consume Turkmen gas and gas of own production. To date we do not consume Russian gas; we don’t need it for balance closing,” said Ivchenko in particular.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister meets with Swedish Riksdag Speaker

Borys Tarasyuk expressed great thankfulness to the Swedish Parliament for support of Ukraine’s course towards the EU and democratic changes in Ukraine.

 
Riksdag Speaker Bjorn von Sydow and all members of Swedish Parliament confirmed their support of political and economic reforms in Ukraine and its Euro integration course.  The participants discussed cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden within the framework of the Council of Europe, which was assessed as an important element of meeting democratic norms and standards.
 
As a reminder, since January 15 Foreign Minister Tarasyuk is in Sweden on the invitation of Swedish authorities.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister on lighthouse conflict

Anatoly Hrytsenko rules out military confrontation between Ukraine and Russia as result of diplomatic conflict around Crimean lighthouses.
According to the Ukrainian Defense Minister Anatoly Hrytsenko, there are plenty problems between two countries, but nor Ukraine neither Russia will allow driving the conflict to military confrontation.

At the same time the Minister said, lease payment for Russia may be increased, Ukrainian Radio told. “If current agreements are totally revised in the most important energy sector of the bilateral relations and relations from “fraternal” are brought to “fair market” ones, it is quite logically that similar approaches will be applied in other sectors of the Ukrainian – Russian relations”, Anatoly Hrytsenko said.

Naftogaz President Ivchenko on the coming plenary sesion

Coming out in today press conference, Naftogaz Head Oleksiy Ivchenko stated that Ukraine never had reduced gas price – $50 per 1,000 c. m.

According to his words, Ukraine had “to give up newspapers, plants and steamship” for Russian “so-called reduced price.”

Commenting on coming parliament’s intention to sack some ministers and Ivchenko particularly, he said that he is not afraid of dismissal.

“If a corresponding person proves me that I caused damages to Ukraine or Naftogaz Company, I will resign by myself,” said Ivchenko.

Ukrtelecom has not been prepared for privatization

Ukrtelecom has not been prepared for privatization

Ministry of Transport and Communication of Ukraine and State Property Fund failed to prepare the company Ukrtelecom for sale by January 18, as it was ordered by PM of Ukraine Yuri Yekhanurov, the Ministry’s press office informed.

According to Tetyana Markiyan, press-secretary of the Ministry of Transportation and Communication, the Ministry does not take a direct part in the preparation of the company for privatization, but it is responsible for ensuring the stability of the market of communication of Ukraine.

To date the State possesses 92.86% of stock of Ukrtelecom.

President of Ukraine spoke with Speaker of Verkhovna Rada

Victor Yushchenko spoke with Parliamentary Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn. They agreed to conduct a joint session of the cabinet and Verkhovna Rada to find a compromise in today’s turbulent political situation, the President’s press office told.

The President reiterated that Ukrainian political elite should settle all conflicts at negotiations to preserve understanding and stability in the country. He expressed confidence that all political parties should give up their emotionsand ambitions and stop making impolite statements in order to demonstrate that they respect Ukraine and the people. Then Yushchenko urged politicians to observe the Constitution and never betray national interests.
