Ukraine can have serious results in biathlon, freestyle and figure skating at 2006 Winter Olympic Games

During the 2006 Winter Olympic Games Ukraine counts on successful performance of biathlonists, freestylers and figure skaters, Minister for Family, Youth and Sports Yuri Pavlenko said, Cabinet’s press office reported.

In figure skating we hope for success of Olena Hrushyna and Ruslan Honcharov from Odesa. Presently the couple is staying and training in the USA, Yuri Pavlenko said.

The State provided enough funds for carrying out a proper training process and renewing the equipment, which is why we hope to get as many medals as possible , the Family, Youth and Sports Minister said.

Pavlenko also noted that within next days a sitting of the 2006 Olympic Organizing Committee, headed by Prime Minister Yuri Yekhanurov, will be staged.

The Ukrainian Olympic team will consist of 58 athletes.

The 20th Olympic Games will be staged in Turin, Italy on February 10 through 26, 2006. About 2,500 athletes, 650 judges are expected to participate in the Games, which are supposed to draw as many as 1.5 spectators.

Ukraine and China to build direct sea shipping

Ukraine and China to build direct sea shipping

Sergey Kamyshev Ukrainian Ambassador to China met the leadership of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) and discussed the establishment of the straight sea shipping between Ukraine and China.

COSCO is the second transport company in the world. Its annual turnover of goods is equal 35 million tones. COSCO opened its trade delegate in Odessa. But the goods are transferred through the third countries, in particular, Egypt.

In case if the turnover of goods between Ukraine and China increases the business will face the direct line of sea shipping.

COSCO also intends to buy Ukrainian ships.

In 2004 COSCO declared the income equaled to $1.48 billion.

Yushchenko: Ukraine can productively cooperate with Latin American countries

In London, Victor Yushchenko said he was convinced Ukraine could productively cooperate with Latin American countries, President’s press office reported.

Speaking about such perspectives, the Head of State informed journalists that there would soon be “a new wave of initiatives” to prove that political and economic interests of the two sides are “either identical or very similar.”

The President noted that at his meetings with several Latin American leaders he repeatedly pointed out that in that region “Ukrainian turbines operate and thousands of Antonov airplanes fly. “Commenting on political cooperation between the countries, the Head of State said he was sure we would soon be able to assess “what kind of intensive cooperation we can achieve.”

The President of Ukraine met with Chatham House members

In London, Victor Yushchenko met with members of Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of Foreign Affairs, the President’s press service reported.

In his speech, the Head of State primarily spoke about measures Ukraine should take to become an EU member.

“Today, Ukraine’s insipient democracy is facing many challenges. EU and NATO integration is our strategy, our vision of Ukraine’s international presence and a key segment of our foreign policy,” stressed the President.

He reiterated that, on February 22, 2005, Ukraine and the EU had signed a three-year action plan that stipulates negotiations for Ukraine to become an EU associate member.

“We are pleased with the way this action plan is being implemented. We have executed two thirds of 67 obligations,” said Yushchenko. “We are ready to assume responsibility to execute all provisions of this document.”

Speaking about changes in Ukraine in the past nine months, the Head of State stressed that there was no political and business persecution while freedom of speech thrived.

“An opinion of opposition leaders is respected as that belonging to government,” he said.

He added the new Ukrainian government was ready to pass a law on opposition.

The President also spoke about world security issues. He noted that, along with the world community, Ukraine “resolutely condemns terrorism in all its manifestations.”

“We will keep participating in all initiatives of the anti-terror alliance to counteract global threats,” he said. “At the same time, we are convinced that, to eradicate terrorism, we must eliminate the environment in which intolerance, tyranny, poverty and humiliation thrive.”

Roman Bezsmertny will head NSNU election campaign on the parliamentary elections

Roman Bezsmertny, Vice Prime Minister and Chairman of “Narodny Soyus ‘Nasha Ukraina'” council, has been elected as head of the party’s election campaign. Former Minister of Justice Roman Zvarich has been elected as a head of election HQ.

Such decision was made on Saturday’s party meeting, as reported by Bezsmertny on today’s press conference.

“We were discussing the model of government of the election campaign and the HQ for the parliamentary elections-2006.Ones spoke in support of transformation of executive committee of the party into the HQ, others seconded the division of function of the HQ and the committee,” said Bezsmertny.

According to him, he is a supporter of the second model, as “the brain center should be separated from the direct execution.”

“Life of the party does not end after the elections. HQ finishes its activity, but executive committee continues to provide all necessary for further development of the party,” pointed out Bezsmertny.

MP Nikolay Katerinchuk, former deputy head of the state tax administration, has been elected as a chairman of the central executive committee of the NSNU Party.

Earlier, the committee was headed by Yuri Yekhanurov, who resigned his plenary powers after appointment on the post of PM of Ukraine.

The Interior Ministry press service reports about arrest of three Chinese illegal immigrants in Gorokhiv town.

The foreigners were placed in Volyn Police Department.

Another group of illegal immigrants was detained in Kolona village, Volyn. The arrested Chinese were given to the frontier guards.

Parliamentary faction of Industrialists and Enterpreneurs seeks cooperation with Russia

Cooperation with Russia will not have a bad impact on Ukraine’s accedence to the WTO in early 2005, Chief of the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Stanislav Dovhyi said at a sitting of the Ukrainian-Russian interparliamentary commission on cooperation during a meeting in Kyiv between Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and Chairman of Russia’s Council of Federation Sergei Mironov, Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Party press office reported.

Stanislav Dovhyi also noted that the beginning of implementation of the Ukraine-Russia Action Plan within the framework of the Yushchenko-Putin international commission and establishment of working bodies of the commission may result in boosting and expanding cooperation between Ukraine and Russia as well as strengthening trust to each other.

The Faction of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs opposed creation of custom, transborder and other obstacles between the countries. We should run open bipartite policy and open dialogue considering the future of our countries, the Chief of the Faction stressed. He also stressed a necessity of transferring cooperation to a new level, from the virtual politics to the specific one, Cabinet’s press office reported.

The coal mines are liquidated in Donetsk region

The coal mines are liquidated in Donetsk region

Fifty three coal enterprise of Donetsk region – 51 coal mines and two ore mill – are in the stage of liquidation.

Alexander Klimenko the deputy of Donetsk Governor informed hat 23 coal mines completed the stage of physical liquidation and Gornyak mine accomplished the first stage of this process.

Donetsk region has spent 2318.9 million UAH of budget recourses since the beginning of the liquidation.

Donuglrestrukturizatsiya (Donetsk coal conversion) annual budget for 2005 makes 358 million UAH.
