The exchange-value of the dollar goes down in Ukraine

Yesterday the National Bank of Ukraine shocked inter-bank currency market by having purchased the surplus supply of USD at the rate of 5.05 UAH/ USD and placed the very rate for today. In any currency exchange point, either in the capital or other cities, one may witness how the USD value is lessening. In the Kiev centre the rate amounts up 4.9 UAH/USD. This fact has shocked not only ordinary citizens, but financiers as well.

In the regions the exchange-value of the hryvnia fluctuates between 5.02 UAH/USD and 5.28 UAH/USD, MIGnews.com.ua reported.

At that, the chief of advisory board of the NBU Head – Valery Litvitzky states that at present the impetuous process of hryvnia intensification compared to US dollar adequately corresponds with the current market situation.

It seems that we should be proud of the fact that the national currency is strengthening and getting valued, though at present Ukrainians are at least dissatisfied and therefore start to exchange their savings.

Foreign investors leave Ukraine

"Eurocar" enterprise had a successful activity on the territory of special economical zone "Transcarpathian" during the last years. Now it is forced to suspend the construction of second line of car factory. The reason is the cancellation of such zones and, as a result, of all the earlier declared privileges, "DVC" reported.

The construction of the second line of the factory for assembling of Skoda, Volkswagen and Audi cars was started three months ago. Its estimated output makes 145 thousand cars per year. It was expected that 2 thousand residents of Transcarpathian region would get fixed up in a new job on October and 4 thousand more would get fixed up in a job related to the production of spare parts in future. But all the operations are suspended due to the cancellation of customs and tax privileges. Nobody can predict whether operations will be renewed.

Vladimir Panov, the Deputy General Director of "Eurocar" explains that all the technical and economical calculations were carried out during favorable tax climate that was guaranteed by the State till the year 2030. Now the guarantees are cancelled, even without a period of transition. About 30 investors, who had their business on the territory of "Transcarpathian", met the problem. They invested hundreds millions USD into their projects and 20 thousand residents of Transcarpathian region were granted with a job.

National persecution in Ukraine

More than hundred politicians and public figures of Ukraine, including two members of parliament, sent in a letter to the government with the demand to conduct hearings "about Jewish activity in the country".

They also demand to bring a criminal action against Jewish organizations, which "undermine sovereignty of Ukraine and destroy its national character".

According to Federation of CIS Jewish communities, authors of the anti-Semitic appeal call Victor Yushchenko to abolish all prizes and honoured awards, which were given to Jewish organizations during Kuchma’s regime.

The letter was also sent to the head of Supreme Court and the speaker of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

NATO talks on Ukrainian membership

NATO talks on Ukrainian membership

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other NATO foreign ministers held the alliance’s first major meeting on former Soviet soil on Thursday, planning to offer Ukraine fast-track membership talks, "The Washington Post" reported.

But NATO officials said the ministers would stop short of setting a target entry date at their talks in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius for fear of annoying Russia.

The meeting in Lithuania, a former Soviet republic which joined NATO last year, underlines how the world has changed since the Cold War ended.

NATO has made it no secret that the victory of pro-Western Viktor Yushchenko in Ukraine’s rerun presidential elections last December after a rigged first poll had boosted the membership chances of Kiev, which also wants to join the European Union.

"The government in Ukraine has made its aspirations clear and is in a better position to fulfil its aspirations for reform," NATO spokesman James Appathurai told a news briefing, contrasting Yushchenko with his pro-Moscow predecessor.

Appathurai said 26-nation NATO would offer Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk a "form of enhanced dialogue, together with a package of practical and political elements."

The ministers would also offer Ukraine help to revamp its army and pursue Western democratic reforms.

There have been calls for Ukraine to be given NATO membership within five years. But alliance diplomats fear a rush toward entry could raise tensions with Russia and alienate many Ukrainians in the former Soviet republic’s pro-Moscow east.
