Ukrainian mountain-climbers to conquer Everest

On April 16, Ukrainian mountain-climbers will set out to conquer Everest.  According to Sergey Bershov, a member of the expedition, the ascent to the "top of the world" should take place in the second half of May, when the weather conditions will be most favorable.

On Saturday, Sergey Bershov and Igor Svergun of Kharkov, Ivan Valenya of Kiev, two mountain-climbers from Czech Republic and one from Georgia, will set out for Katmandu, where all six will climb the Everest, according to a report by Interfax Ukraine.

The Kharkov regional club of mountain-climbers is organizing the Everest expedition in honor of the 60th anniversary of victory in WWII.  At the top of Mt. Everest, the mountain-climbers will set up the flags of Ukraine and the city of Kharkov.

According to Bershov, the ascent will be undertaken by ‘the classic route, which is considered the safest."  "However," he commented that "there are no easy routes to the top of Everest."
The participants of the expedition are planning to return home at the end of May or in the beginning of June.

Sergey Bershov – the most experienced member of the expedition – conquered eight different eight-thousand-meter peaks, as well as two ascents to Everest.

Timoshenko: Government will do without Zvarich

The prime minister of Ukraine, Julia Timoshenko, is convinced that the government can function without the minister of justice, Roman Zvarich.

"I just want to say that Zvarich is not an active member of government – out of tens of Cabinet meetings he was present in just a few sessions," she said in an interview to "Zerkalo Nedely."

"This is not the government’s problem, but that of a particular minister," Timoshenko added.

The prime minister also commented that there are very good deputies in the Ministry of Justice, who continue working diligently.  "Here we are talking about a case where someone’s absence is not noted," added Timoshenko.

Zinchenko: Nobody called Kolesnikov to Secretariat

State Secretary Alexander Zinchenko denies that Boris Kolesnikov had a meeting with an official in the president’s administration, during which Kolesnikov was threatened by institution of prosecution against him.

Mr. Zinchenko declared in an interview to BBC: "Nobody called Kolesnikov to Secretariat of President of Ukraine, I certify this. If there was such a person, let Kolesnikov name him and specify the time of visit. I talked to Kolesnikov twice after Yushchenko’s visit to Donetsk on February 11. We did not touch the question of his visit or his political views…".

Zinchenko added he does not consider "Kolesnikov’s case" a political one.

Who says Ukraine will join NATO?

One of these days Mass Medias informed that Ukraine can get an invitation to enter NATO to the end of April. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Antanas Valionis has supposed that on April 21 in Vilnius, within the Summit of Foreign Affairs Ministers of NATO state-members, "Ukraine-NATO" commission   will adopt the real Action Plan concerning the Ukraine’s further joining the Alliance.

However, yesterday this statement has been denied by the NATO Secretary General Yaal de Hoop Skheffer, reported. More than that, this shouldn’t be expected even over the informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of NATO state members in Vilnius (Lithuania).

According to Skheffer, over the meeting to be held on the coming Wednesday or Thursday, the negotiations will be carried out with the Ukrainian colleagues. "We will certainly promote the Ukraine-NATO relationships forward. Also, the agreement on the more intensified dialogue is to be reached. Though, there will not be any decision taken concerning the membership. This is out of the question for the time being", – Mr. Skheffer has added.

The president Yushchenko has repeatedly stated both in Ukraine and within his foreign trips about the European course of our country and our intention to be included into the North-Atlantic Alliance in the foreseeable future.
