President: Gas price for Ukraine must not exceed $250

President: Gas price for Ukraine must not exceed $250

As of today Ukraine buys Russian gas at discriminating price, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych told the final press conference of the year, ForUm correspondent reports. According to the head of state, the continuation of consumption of gas at such price will lead to total collapse of the economy of the country.

“We insist on reduction of gas price to European level, and taking into account Kharkiv agreements we demand additional $100 discount. I believe the gas price should not exceed $250,” Yanukovych said.

The President reminded that current gas price is 515 dollars minus 100 dollars discount of Kharkiv agreements.

Yanukovych noted that Ukraine in the negotiations also favors establishing a gas consortium and allocating responsibility for the work of the gas transit system (GTS) between Ukraine, Russia and Europe. “We’re talking about the GTS modernization, as well as maintaining the volume of gas flow at the current level and in the future – an increase of gas pumping,” he said.

Yanukovych does not object Tymoshenko's release

Yanukovych does not object Tymoshenko’s release

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych has nothing against the release of former Premier Yulia Tymoshenko, but only in accordance with the current legislation.

“Moreover, I would like this case to be finally finished, but I cannot take personal responsibility on this. Judicial system is independent in Ukraine, and trying to interfere would be a crime from my side,” the President noted, he told the final press conference of the year, ForUm correspondent reports.

He also pointed out that if the parliament adopts a corresponding law, the matter can be different, but he will always respect the court decision. “Tymoshenko’s case should move from political plane to juridical one. It’s a shame Yulia Volodymyrovna has politicized the situation that much,” Yanukovych said.

“It is obvious that her actions as of PM harmed Ukraine, and if it is proved she must be brought to account,” he said. Once again Yanukovych underlined he has no right to interfere with the process. “What was I supposed to do? To forbid the law enforcements to hold investigation? What grounds did I have for this? The only thing I demanded was transparency of the process, as the case is being studied by the society and specialists,” he explained.

Yanukovych also underlined that Tymoshenko herself did not want to decriminalize the article. “When the draft bill on decriminalization of economic crimes, including article 365, was first submitted to the parliament, the opposition accused the majority of try to avoid responsibility in the future. Hence the idea was rejected,” Yanukovych said.
