Ukraine is a leading grain producer, says President

President Viktor Yanukovych congratulated Ukrainian farmers on the excellent harvest collected in 2011. “We have already threshed more than 50 million tons of grain, and expect to get 55 million tons total, which can become a historical record for the country. I congratulate those present in this hall and all the farmers of the country on this success,” said Viktor Yanukovych at a meeting on the occasion of the Agriculture Worker’s Day.

He stressed that Ukraine’s agricultural sector demonstrates a strong growth tendency. In 10 months of this year, agricultural production grew by nearly 17%. “This year, Ukraine has firmly secured its place as a leading grain producing state of the world,” he said, adding that by the volume of wheat exports our state ranked 8th in the world, corn – 3rd, and barley – 1st.

Viktor Yanukovych praised the success of Poltava region farmers (5 million tons of grain threshed), Vinnytsa region (over 4 million tons), Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Kharkiv regions (more than 3 million tons each).

On the occasion of farmers’ professional holiday the President presented national decorations.

Yanukovych: Law enforcement bodies should be more effective in fighting corruption in land relations

President Viktor Yanukovych demands law enforcement agencies to work more effectively on combating corruption in the sphere of land relations, he said at today’s meeting on the occasion of Agriculture Worker’s Day.

“I demand law enforcement and other responsible bodies to take effective steps to address this shameful issue. It is necessary to create such a regulatory environment that would destroy shady schemes and was a prerequisite for the formation of an effective land market in Ukraine,” he said, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

Viktor Yanukovych stressed that corruption in this field eliminates competition and distorts price formation in agriculture.

The President stressed that bringing land relations out of the shadows is an important component of the effective functioning of land market.

President: It is necessary to develop cooperative movement in agriculture

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych believes it is important to develop cooperative movement in agriculture, he said at a festive meeting on the occasion of the Agriculture Worker’s Day.

“Along with strengthening private farming and large-scale production, everything necessary should be done to develop a new cooperative movement in rural areas. It should become an important foundation for the restructuring of agriculture,” he said, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

President Yanukovych said the development of cooperatives would improve the profitability of agricultural production, strengthen the budget and opportunities of every family living in the countryside.

Viktor Yanukovych also drew attention to the need to develop efficient agrarian market infrastructure, including transportation and logistics, retail networks, etc.

According to the President, Ukraine also has great potential to develop organic agriculture. He noted that there are more than 100 farms in our country adhering to the principles of organic farming and certified by the applicable international standards. Viktor Yanukovych said that the adoption of a law on organic production would support this type of farming .

“Global food market has a strong tendency to grow,” Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President also called promising the development of modern vertically integrated high-tech complexes of food production to provide domestic market with the products of high level of processing. “This is one of the leading objectives of agrarian reform,” he said.

President: Agrarian reform’s purpose is to create transparent mechanism for land turnover

The purpose of agrarian reform is to create a transparent mechanism for land turnover based on a single land registry system, President Viktor Yanukovych stressed at a meeting on the occasion of the Agriculture Worker’s Day.

“We should do everything so that land reform protected first and foremost the interests of farmers, prevented them being deprived of their land, allowed them to realize of their rights, stopped shady privatization schemes of agricultural lands,” he said, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

The President said the reform would also work to increase the investment attractiveness of agricultural sector, development of mortgage lending, emergence of viable agricultural products markets, and agriculture support systems of the European level.

“We should finally summon up political courage and responsibility, and bring it to completion. We should solve the problem of historic importance – return owners their land by realizing their constitutional right to freely manage their land,” Viktor Yanukovych stressed.

According to President Yanukovych, the implementation of a civilized market of agricultural land will provide an important impetus to the revival of Ukrainian rural areas, development of agriculture, and the economy as a whole.

Viktor Yanukovych noted that in the framework of land reform the Law On the State Land Cadaster has been adopted. He expressed the belief that the establishment of a modern system of land inventory will guarantee the rights of land owners and users, implementation of land management, land use and protection control, establishment of reasonable pay for land.

He also noted that there is another important bill currently pending consideration in the Parliament – the Law “On the Land Market”, which is designed to support the development of farming, small and medium enterprises in rural areas.

“I am convinced that lawmakers will ensure the quickest and most transparent consideration of the law. And that the Government will conduct an informing campaign, so that the people could understand the essence of the reform, how good it is for them,” he said.

Energy Ministry decides to merge Gaz Ukrainy and Naftogaz

The Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine has decided to merge National joint-stock company Naftogaz Ukrainy and its subsidiary Gaz Ukrainy, according to a statement in the Uriadovy Kurier newspaper.

“Gaz Ukrainy announces the cessation of its activities and its joining the successors: Naftogaz Ukrainy and Naftogaz’s subsidiary Budivelnyk,” reads the statement, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

Creditors’ claims are accepted until January 20, 2012.

Earlier Naftogaz Ukrainy renewed all contracts for natural gas supplies with gas supply and gasification enterprises and municipal heating companies, which earlier were signed with its subsidiary Gaz Ukrainy.

Ukraine signed free trade agreement with Montenegro

Governments of Ukraine and Montenegro have signed the agreement of free trade, ForUm learned from the press office of the Economy Ministry.

According to Economy Minister Andriy Kluyev, among prospective trends of bilateral cooperation, interesting for Ukraine, are housing and industrial construction, modernization of railway roads and ship building industry in Montenegro, supplies of city and long-distance buses, food supplies and its production in Montenegro. The Ukrainian side is also interested in enlargement of military and technical cooperation.

Experts expect increase of import of Ukrainian goods and services on Montenegro’s market, as well as enlargement of outlet area for production of Ukrainian manufactures in the region. The Ukrainian side also expects increase of transit of goods’ and services’ flows through its territory in the context of integration of Ukrainian economy in the EU.

Tap water is drinkable without additional filtration, representatives of Kyiv Water Supply Company declared during a session of press-club.

According to them, the quality of dinking water meets all current standards. “Personally, I drink tap water and don’t use any filters,” says the leading engineer of the company Inna Lavrenchuk.

The participants of the session also informed that for the moment Kyiv has the best in Ukraine water filtration system.

Yefremov: New law on elections excludes falsifications

The leader of the party of Regions parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov declares that the new law on parliamentary elections excludes any possibility of frauds, ForUm correspondent reports.

He underlined that the given law got approval of both majority and opposition. “They confirmed that with the adoption of this law any speculations on unfair elections are groundless,” Yefremov said.

Yafremov also pointed out that the law was supported by 360 MPs, which is very rare situation in the parliament lately.

Commenting on the 5% passing barrier, the PR faction leader recommended the small parties to merge in order to get the seats in the parliament.

“If some politicians have problems with 5% passing barrier, they still have time to moderate their ambitions and to form political forces, which would be competitive in the politicum of our state,” he said.
