President praises signing of agreement on joint activities with Shell

President Viktor Yanukovych has met Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser.

“During the meeting we have discussed an agreement signed today between Shell and the Ukrainian side. Besides, we have also discussed the production of shale gas,” Peter Voser said.

“Shell is interested in such a cooperation. On our part we intend to provide the capabilities of our company’s experts and the technology we possess, in order to intensify and expand energy production in Ukraine,” Royal Dutch Shell CEO said.

On September 1 2011, Ukraine and Royal Dutch Shell have signed an agreement on joint search for and development of hydrocarbons in the Dmipro-Donets Basin. The agreement will allow Ukraine access to advanced technologies of searching for and developing hydrocarbons at six licensed sites: Shebelynsky, West Shebelynsky, Pavlovsk-Svitlovsky, Melekhivsky, Gersevanivsky, Novo-Mechebylivsky.

Royal Dutch Shell will invest $800 million in geological exploration and production of shale gas in eastern Ukraine, Energy Minister Yury Boyko said on Wednesday.

“The investment will reach $800 million. This is the first significant joint agreement which gives us an opportunity to increase gas production in our country in the nearest future,” Boyko said after signing the contract between Shell and Ukraine’s Naftogaz energy company.

Tymoshenko: Your Honor, you are a criminal!

Tymoshenko: Your Honor, you are a criminal!

Judge Rodion Kireyev has rejected most of the documents the defense asked be admitted as evidence in the case of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The court agreed to obtain the contract signed between Naftohaz and RosUkrEnergo in 2006 for the supply of natural gas and accounting records on the price of technical gas. The other six requests were denied, with the judge claiming that they weren’t sufficiently justified.

“Your Honor, you are a criminal. You are covering up a crime, you are an accomplice to fraud, you are deliberately covering up the truth in this trial. Nechvohlod, Khoroshkovsky, the prosecutors sitting here, Yanukovych, you and RosUkrEnergo, which today is represented in all government bodies, are one criminal group,” Yulia Tymoshenko said, commenting on Judge Rodion Kireyev’s decision, according to ex-premier’s official website.

This remark was met by applause from the members of parliament in the courtroom.

Minister Boiko: No 'Belarusian scenario' or Naftogaz-Gazprom merger

Minister Boiko: No ‘Belarusian scenario’ or Naftogaz-Gazprom merger

Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko has said in an interview with the government’s Uriadovy Kurier newspaper that there will not be any merger between Ukraine’s Naftogaz and Russia’s Gazprom.

“There won’t be either a Naftogaz-Gazprom merger, or any kind of Belarusian scenario. This is Ukraine’s position,” he said, UKRINFORM reported.

Boiko said that Ukraine and Russia were continuing to hold talks on cooperation in the gas sector.

“The negotiations should soon be put on an official, rather than a working level. Then our citizens will be informed about what the government is proposing to our Russian colleagues,” the minister said.

He said that Ukraine’s principled position was that cooperation should be developed on an equal footing.

Boiko added that the talks were not easy, but he said he hoped that the parties would reach a compromise, taking into account the strategic level of their relationship.

The official again noted that next year Ukraine would reduce gas consumption by about 10 billion cubic meters, simultaneously increasing the production of its own fuel.

Yuschenko asks court to cancel decision to strip Bandera, Shukhevych off hero titles

Yuschenko asks court to cancel decision to strip Bandera, Shukhevych off hero titles

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court of Ukraine with a request that it cancel a ruling by the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine, which upheld decisions by lower courts to declare illegal his decrees conferring the Hero of Ukraine titles to Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych.

“We are asking the court to cancel the ruling by the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine. We want to repeal the decision on the Shukhevych case and the Bandera case, and we want the cases to be submitted for repeat consideration,” Yuschenko’s lawyer, Viacheslav Martyniuk, told Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that under the law, a complaint could be filed at the Supreme Court through the Higher Administrative Court.

“Under the procedure, the Higher Administrative Court now has to decide whether to send the application to the Supreme Court, which may cancel the decision and submit it for repeat consideration,” he said.

As reported, on August 2, 2011, the Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine threw out appeals by Yuschenko and Yuriy Shukhevych, the son of the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, Roman Shukhevych, against a ruling of Donetsk Administrative Court of Appeals declaring illegal a presidential decree conferring the Hero of Ukraine title to the elder Shukhevych.

On the same day, the Higher Administrative Court upheld a ruling of Donetsk District Court of April 2, 2010 and a ruling of Donetsk Administrative Court of Appeals of June 23, 2010 that declared illegal a decree by Yuschenko dated January 20, 2010 conferring the Hero of Ukraine title to the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), Stepan Bandera.

Azarov: In 10 years people will hunt after hryvnia, not dollar

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov considers dollar a weak currency, as he said during his lecture in the Kyiv national University.

The Premier underlined that for the development of economy it is necessary to think about stability of national currency. “Do we have opportunities for this? Of course yes. We spend currency charily and keep currency reserve at proper level,” he added.

Tymoshenko insists that 8 key pieces of evidence be added to case

Tymoshenko insists that 8 key pieces of evidence be added to case

Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her defense want 8 key documents to be added to the case that will held determine the truth.

“If these requests aren’t granted, this will be direct interference in establishing the truth in this case by those that will object that these documents be requested and added to the record,” Yulia Tymoshenko said today in court, according to the official website.

The defense is asking the court to request from Naftohaz two contracts for the supply of gas for technical needs in 2008 and 2009. “Only by comparing these two documents can you determine whether there were damages. But this primary source information wasn’t included in the case,” she said.

The defense is again asking the court to include the audit by Ernst&Young of Naftohaz’s activities in 2009.

“If these documents are added to the case then the case must be closed at that very second because the audit directly refutes the prosecution’s charges,” she said.

The ex-premier also wants added to the record the minutes of the Naftohaz board meeting that confirm the effectiveness of the gas contracts signed with Russia in 2009.

The defense also wants the court to obtain from the Prosecutor General’s Office 16 volumes of attachments to the letter to the Security Services of Ukraine instructing the prosecutor’s office to open a criminal case over the 2009 gas agreements. “This case was ordered, falsified, fabricated in the Security Services of Ukraine headed by Mr. Khoroshkovsky, who is a business partner of Mr. Firtash,” she said.

The judge then interrupted Yulia Tymoshenko and told her to talk about the merits of their petition. “I’m surprised that you react immediately every time the names Khoroshkovsky and RosUkrEnergo are mentioned,” said the ex-premier.

Yulia Tymoshenko and her lawyers are also asking the court to obtain from Naftohaz the accounting records regarding the price for technical gas, and the 2006-2009 contracts for the purchase of gas by RosUkr and its transfer to the company Ukrhaz-Energo.

“This is a moment of truth in the trial – whether the presiding judge wants to establish objective and impartial information. That is why my lawyers are requesting that the court obtain the documents needed to establish the truth,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.

PM Azarov: Ukraine doesn't need discounts on Russian gas

PM Azarov: Ukraine doesn’t need discounts on Russian gas

Ukraine does not need a discount on gas, it needs a normal agreement on the price, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov was speaking Thursday at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

“Russia holds its own, it tells us that we join a customs union of three countries, and then we will get a discount. And we say we do not need any discounts. We need a normal agreement under which the price of gas, which we buy, should not be higher than in Germany, for example,” he said, according to UKRINFORM.
