World Bank lends Ukraine $200 million for energy efficiency project

The World Bank board has approved a $200 million loan to Ukraine for the energy efficiency project, according to UKRINFORM.

The borrower is the state-run Ukreximbank, which can perform direct project financing, or refinance the money to other participating banks for implementation of separate provisions against the Ukrainian government guarantees.

The project aims to help Ukraine achieve its ambitious goals to reduce energy intensity by 20% before 2015 and by 50% before 2030. This will also help reduce Ukraine’s dependence on imported gas and thus reduce the risks of energy security and energy costs, the World Bank says.

To join Customs Union, Ukraine will have to negotiate with 152 WTO countries

To join Customs Union, Ukraine will have to negotiate with 152 WTO countries

In the case of Ukraine’s accession to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, where there are high customs tariffs, Ukraine will have first to negotiate their change with 152 member countries of the World Trade Organization, WTO representative Keith Rockwell explained the position of the organization to Radio Liberty, UKRINFORM reported.

The World Trade Organization is a kind of contract; upon entry into the WTO governments sign contracts with their trading partners; now the WTO has 153 members, therefore, Ukraine has 152 trading partners; entering the WTO, Ukraine agreed with these 152 countries that its marginal rate for agricultural products will be 11% and industrial products 5%, Rockwell reminded.

If Ukraine now wants to increase its tariffs on a permanent basis, it will need to negotiate this with all of its partners in the WTO, the representative of the organization explained.

Tymoshenko urges Yuriy Lutsenko to end hunger strike

The Batkivshchyna Party and its leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, are urging Yuriy Lutsenko to end his hunger strike.

“I, better than anyone, understand the reasons that forced Yuriy Lutsenko to resort to radical actions – to go on a hunger strike in protest of the total lawlessness and political repressions,” Yulia Tymoshenko said in a statement.

“However, it’s very important that you, Yuriy, understand: the immorality of the government isn’t worth human life, especially yours – our friend, colleague and political leader. Think about your family,” she said.

Yuriy Lutsenko has been on a hunger strike for 26 days and there is serious concern about the state of his health.

The Batkivshchyna Party is urging the government to end the unjustified persecution of Yuriy Lutsenko and close the politically motivated case against him.

Yanukovych: Continuation of privatization will allow public property finding effective owner

Continuation of the privatization process will facilitate the transferring of public property to effective  owners, President Viktor Yanukovych said at today’s enlarged meeting of the Regional Committee on Economic Reforms in Mykolayiv.

“We will soon adopt a decision regarding privatization of the property still remaining in the country,” Viktor Yanukovych said. “Certainly, strategic directions will all be managed by the state,” he said, “and all others will be gradually privatized, so they had a good owner.”

President: Ukraine will complete 2011 with deficit-free budget

President: Ukraine will complete 2011 with deficit-free budget

President Viktor Yanukovych believes that Ukraine will complete 2011 with a deficit-free budget, he said today in Mykolayiv.

“We had foreseen this year’s budget deficit of 3.5%. Today, we already see from the dynamics that it is reducing, and we will approach the deficit-free budget by the year-end. This will be ensured one hundred percent,” Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President reminded that in 2010 the budget deficit was reduced from 15% to 5%.

He drew particular attention to the reduction of the Pension Fund deficits. According to Viktor Yanukovych, it is very important, because it actually means the rise in wages and deposits of citizens. “We are reducing the Pension Fund deficit up to 12% monthly,” the President of Ukraine said.
