Cabinet: Ukraine is overcoming the crisis

Cabinet: Ukraine is overcoming the crisis

GDP growth in Ukraine has posted 5.5% since the beginning of the year, First Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Kliuyev said in an interview for the 2000 newspaper, according to UKRINFORM.

“I will say this: the situation is extremely difficult, but we are still slowly emerging from the crisis. First of all it concerns the basic industries, on which we can make certain conclusions,” he said.

Kliuyev noted that the situation in metallurgy is “rather better”, but the chemists face difficult situation due to falling prices for their products. “But I hope that by the end of the summer forecasts for the revival of demand of the global economy and their products will come true, then we can confidently talk about stabilization of the production in this industry,” he believes.

The first deputy prime minister also considers the second wave of economic turmoil is unlikely to come: “I think there will be no new shocks of this magnitude any more. A serious recovery is seen in many countries, we also see the recovery in the largest economy in Europe – in Germany. And even in Spain, which was regarded as problematic, growth renewal is expected. In other words, we have enough grounds to say that the second wave, or any major relapses in the global economy will not happen.”

According to preliminary data of the State Statistics Committee, Ukraine’s GDP in the second quarter 2010 increased by 6%. In the first quarter 2010 GDP growth in Ukraine was 4.9%.

In turn, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov previously estimated GDP growth in the first half at 6.3%.

Kyiv stops construction nearby St Sofia Cathedral

Kyiv has refused from the construction of the Fresco Sofia residential compound in the buffer zone of the St. Sofia Cathedral of Kyiv as city mayor Leonid Chernovetsky signed a relevant decree, National radio reported.

According to NGO “Save Old Kyiv”, the construction work at the site is fully stopped. The construction was accompanied by active protests of local residents. UNESCO threatened to withdraw the Saint Sofia Cathedral national reserve in Kyiv from the World Heritage LIST in August at its regular session.

The reason for such a decision could be the chaotic construction development around the monument. However, at the 34th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Brasilia, 25 July to 3 August, the Ukrainian delegation secured the confirmation of the status of Kyiv’s St. Sofia Cathedral and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as the sites of cultural heritage of universal significance.

Party of Regions refuses from pre-election rally

The Party of Regions will not hold its rally dedicated to the upcoming local elections, first deputy chairman of the Party of Regions Volodymyr Rybak told the Obkom on-line edition.

“We will not conduct a pre-election congress. We would have a sort of all-Ukrainian meeting of representatives from all regions of Ukraine. We invite deputies of councils of various levels, representatives of deputy candidates. This meeting is likely to be held in Kyiv,” he said.

According to Rybak, this event, in fact, will launch the election campaign for the Party of Regions. “We plan to launch the campaign to tell people about the program that our representatives will use for the elections. Today there is a program of the president and we need to choose people in local government, capable of carrying out this program and not dividing the land and put money in their pockets,” he stressed.
